I think the Invincible books are, on balance, great. But I think the comics are best read as both a fun, low-stakes comic and a study in the development of a writer, Robert Kirkman, over time. It begins cringey, unsubtle, a little derogatory; but ends with excellent character arcs, solid plots, and satisfying payoffs.
In the same way, I read the new show as Kirkman addressing some of the weaker points of the early books, and updating them for the modern age.
Highly recommend the books and the show!
